When activated carbon is “saturated”: what happens next and why it matters

Activated carbon does not work indefinitely.
At some point its pores become filled – and that is when changes begin that you should not overlook.

The pores stop taking up contaminants
The internal surface of carbon consists of millions of micropores. Once they are filled, new molecules simply cannot be adsorbed.

A sharp drop in efficiency
At first, the decline is almost unnoticeable, but then the quality of purification can deteriorate quite quickly – especially in continuous processes.

Breakthrough of contaminants is possible
When the carbon is saturated, substances start to pass through the filter without being retained. This is critical for water, spirits and process solutions.

Why it is important to control media life

To avoid loss of quality, plants and facilities:

  • monitor purification performance

  • calculate the service life of the carbon

  • replace the media in time

Activated carbon is effective as long as its pores remain free.
If the activated carbon has high activity, it will work longer and more efficiently. If the carbon is not activated (regular carbon) or has very low activity, it will not work or will work inefficiently. This is also important to understand. Highly active grades of activated carbon include the CarboClean product range.

Controlling saturation is not a formality – it is the key to stable and predictable operation of the entire treatment system.
