FAQ: What are the different types of activated carbon and how do they differ?

What are the different types of activated carbon and what are their differences?
Activated carbon is not a single product, but rather a group of sorbents with different properties. The type of carbon is selected based on the specific task, ranging from water purification to food and industrial processes.

Based on the raw material used
• Birch (wood) carbon has a high sorption capacity, low ash content, and is cost-effective. It is optimal for water, alcohol, and the food and chemical industries.
• Coconut carbon is harder but less effective in removing complex organic impurities.
• Coal tar — used in gas purification and industrial ventilation.

By shape and fraction
• Granulated (GAC) or crushed — for filters, columns, and industrial plants.
• Powdered (PAC) — for quick refining, decolorization, and work in liquid media.
• Extruded (pellets) — more often used for gas and air purification.

By activation method
• Physical activation (steam-gas activation)— steam and temperature, an environmentally friendly method, stable properties.
• Chemical activation — high porosity, but with restrictions on application in the food industry.

The Perm Sorbent Plant produces granular (crushed), powdered, and extruded (pellets) birch (wood) activated carbon using SorbTech technology (steam activation — only fire, water, and air).
