MDEA in water: how to achieve really deep purification

Methyl diethanolamine (MDEA) is widely used in the oil and gas and chemical industries, but when it gets into wastewater it becomes a serious problem. It is highly soluble, resistant to simple filtration and often “comes with” oil products and organics.

Why are standard methods not enough?
MDEA is not retained by mechanical filters and is poorly removed without additional treatment — the water is formally clean, but it does not meet the standards in terms of toxicity and COD.

The optimal treatment scheme is as follows:
1. Pre-treatment to remove mechanical impurities
2. Physical and chemical treatment
3. Final sorption with activated carbon, which is the key step
