FAQ: How much does spent activated carbon weigh?

How much does used activated carbon weigh?
CarboClean activated carbon is a powerful sorbent that works like a “sponge” for organic substances and impurities.

But there is an important point: after operation, the coal changes not only its properties, but also its weight.
In the process of work, the coal absorbs water and pollution. Its mass can increase by 1.5-2 times, and sometimes even more, depending on the concentration of impurities and the time of use.

For example: 1 kg of CarboClean 6x12 activated carbon after filtration may weigh 1.7-2 kg with the impurities it has retained.
Why is it important to know this? To calculate logistics and plan operating costs.
Benefits: CarboClean activated birch carbon has a lower bulk density compared to coconut shell or stone-based sorbents. This means that disposal costs will be 2 times lower!

For example: A 1 m³ filter can hold 220 kg of CarboClean 12x40 activated birch charcoal. After filtration, the weight increases by 1.7 times. Therefore, 374 kg will need to be disposed of. If you use 12x40 coconut charcoal in a filter with the same volume of 1 m³, you will need to purchase more coconut charcoal, 480 kg, and the coconut charcoal will solve the same problems, but it will be less effective in sorption, and the weight of the spent charcoal will be 1.3 times different from the original weight. Therefore, you will need to dispose of 624 kg of coconut charcoal.

Benefits and Solutions: Simple math shows that CarboClean birch charcoal can help you save money on both loading and disposal.
