Dictionary of Home Distiller: Speaking the Same Language
Home distilling is not only about the apparatus, mash, and distillation, but also about its own special language. Over the years of practice, homebrewers have developed a whole "dictionary" where each word accurately describes the process, taste, or state of the drink. Let's share the most popular terms
Mash is the foundation of everything. It is a mixture of water, sugar, grain, or fruit with yeast that undergoes fermentation.
Samoplyas is an active, vigorous fermentation process where the mash "plays" and foams. This is a sign that the process is going well.
Distillation is the process of evaporating and condensing alcohol vapors. It can be the first, second, or even third distillation process.
Understanding these terms is the first step towards conscious and high-quality moonshine production. Proper purification, including using activated charcoal, transforms homemade distillate into a truly pure product.
